"A2A Sustainability Decision Labs: From Audience to Actors"
A Learning Design Project Led by
Prof Sai Kishore RAVI
Why A2A
In the age of AI, information is no longer the scarce resource in education. The scarce resource is judgement: the ability to use knowledge when evidence is incomplete, choices involve trade-offs, stakeholders disagree, and decisions still have to be made.
Our vision is to redefine energy and sustainability education as a rehearsal space for this kind of judgement. Students should not graduate only knowing technologies, policies, and concepts. They should graduate able to think with others, question assumptions, test ideas safely, learn from consequences, and translate technical knowledge into decisions that society, industry, and communities can act on.

How A2A Decision Labs work
Before class, students use short animated pre-class videos to build essential conceptual grounding. This allows class time to shift from content delivery to decision rehearsal.
Inside the decision lab, teams confront energy, water, circular economy, and ESG scenarios shaped by the messiness of real systems: limited information, competing priorities, stakeholder pressure, operational limits, and uncertain consequences. AI role play brings those tensions into the room, forcing students to defend assumptions and respond to changing conditions. Gamified virtual labs let teams test pathways, fail safely, retry, and see how decisions unfold. Field and industry engagement then completes the loop by showing how the same trade-offs appear in power plants, recycling systems, water infrastructure, and sustainability practice.
The mission is to make judgement teachable: to move students from listening to deciding, from answering questions to framing problems, and from classroom participation to future sustainability leadership.
